New Protest Guidelines From UCR

["This sign is larger than 30" x 30," you're under arrest"]

New UC Riverside Protest Guidelines:
- Protest must be planned a month+ ahead, and communicated to admin
- An admin representative must be present
- Admin must approve march routes, chalking messages
- All protest must be sponsored by a department or registered organization
- No signs on sticks

Just in time for a Regents meeting at UCR on January 18.

  1. UC Berkeley Chancellor Birgeneau’s campus police report to the chancellor and the campus police take direction from the chancellor. University of California (UC) campus chancellors vet their campus police protocols. Birgeneau allowed pepper spray and use of batons to be included in his campus police protocols.

Chancellor Birgeneau’s campus police use brutal baton jabs on students protesting increases in tuition. UC Berkeley Chancellor Birgeneau and UC Davis Chancellor Katehi are in dereliction of their duties.

Birgeneau and UC Davis Chancellor need to quit or be fired for permitting the brutal outrages on students protesting tuition increases.

  4. From the UCR Guidlines:
"Chalking - Develop a proposal to include sample messaging, proposed locations, and a
cleanup plan for review and approval by UCR."

The requirement to provide sample messaging to the administration for approval reeks of prior restraint on the part of the administration.

  5. I like how the rules also state "don't distribute literature at the entrances to buildings"

Wasn't that the kickoff event for the free speech movement in the '60s? I believe it was the suppression of 'flyering' on Sproul Plaza that sparked the reaction of thousands...

There should be such a similar reaction to this. Outrageous!
