Per Haviland Hall: 1 -- you don't even identify the right building. 2 -- it wasn't the businessman but his wife Hannah who inherited his money and decided to put it to better use that paid for the building.
What this demonstrates to me is that without these business people Berkeley would not have any buildings. That doesn't seem optimal.
